nat_medicine1Naturopathic Medicine is a primary healthcare system that treats acute and chronic people holistically and provides preventative treatment by using natural therapies. It addresses the source of illness and promotes the body’s own natural healing abilities.

Naturopathic Medicine is safe and effective. One study showed that homeopathy is more effective than antibiotics in treating ear infections, safer for the children and prevents further occurrences. Naturopathic medicine is also cost effective. The VADA Wellness Program demonstrated a $1.5 million annual savings in health care cost by providing access to Naturopathic Medicine.

Treatment is guided by the six fundamental principles.

Six Fundamental Principles of Naturopathic Medicine

principle 3 FIRST DO NO HARM - Primum Non Nocere

Naturopathic doctors seek to do no harm by using methods and substances that minimize risks of side effects, using the least force needed to diagnose and treat, avoiding the harmful suppression of symptoms and working with the self-healing process.

principle 2 IDENTIFY AND TREAT THE CAUSE - Tolle Causam

Naturopathic doctors seek to identify and remove the underlying causes of illness, not merely eliminate or suppress symptoms.

principle 1 THE HEALING POWER OF NATURE - Vis Medicatrix Naturae

Naturopathic medicine recognizes an inherent healing process in the person that is ordered and intelligent. The body is capable of healing itself. The role of the naturopathic doctor is to remove obstacles to healing and to stimulate this inherent natural tendency of the body.

principle 4 DOCTOR AS TEACHER - Docere

Naturopathic doctors recall that the origin of the word "doctor" is the Latin word, "to teach." A fundamental emphasis in naturopathic medicine is patient education.

principle 5 TREAT THE WHOLE PERSON - Tolle Totum

Naturopathic doctors attempt to take into consideration all the factors that make up patients' lives and affect their health and well-being.

principle 6 PREVENTION - Prevenire

Naturopathic medicine emphasizes the prevention of disease, assesses risk factors, and makes appropriate interventions with patients to prevent illness.
